New Holland TMF 45 – TMF (Tractor Multi-Function) Controller: Hitch Calibration Attempted Without Engine Running or Lost Engine Speed Signal

A hitch calibration (electronic draft control calibration) was attempted when the engine was not running, or the engine speed signal failed/was lost during the calibration process.

   Verify Operating State: Ensure the engine is actually running when you attempt to initiate the hitch calibration.

   Check RPM Requirements: Verify that the engine speed is maintained at the correct level (some related lower valve calibration steps require the engine speed to be set above 1600 RPM).

   Verify Dash Signal: Look at the instrument cluster or use a diagnostic tool to see if the engine RPM is registering. If the dash shows zero RPM while the engine is running, the speed signal is failing.

   Inspect Wiring: Check the engine speed sensor wiring harness and connector for physical damage, chafing, or corrosion.

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and ensure the transmission is in neutral.

   Locate the Sensor

   If the diagnostic checks confirm a missing RPM signal, locate the engine speed sensor on the engine block.

   Inspect and Clean

   Disconnect the sensor's electrical connector. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back terminals. Clean with contact cleaner if necessary.

   Test Wiring Continuity

   Check the wiring continuity from the sensor connector back to the instrumentation/TMF controller to rule out a broken wire.

   Replace the Sensor

   If the wiring is intact but the speed signal is still failing, remove the retaining bolt securing the engine speed sensor and pull the sensor out.

   Install New Part

   Insert the new OEM engine speed sensor, secure the retaining bolt, and plug in the electrical connector.

   Recalibrate

   Start the engine, verify that the RPM signal is now present on the dash, and restart the hitch calibration procedure.
