TMF 66

New Holland TMF 66 – TMF: Battery Voltage is too Low

Issue description

The 12VF voltage supply to the controller has dropped below 8 volts.

Applies to these machines

  • T6 Series
  • T7 Series
  • T8 Series
  • T9 Series
  • TG Series
  • TG210
  • TG230
  • TG255
  • TG285
  • MXM Series
  • TM Series
  • SP280
  • SP480

Check the cause

  1. Test battery voltage at rest using a digital multimeter (should be at or above 12.4V)

  2. Load test the battery to ensure voltage does not drop significantly under load or in cold weather

  3. Inspect the main chassis ground and the specific ground strap for the TMF controller for corrosion

  4. Check alternator output while the engine is running to verify it is charging the system (typically around 14V)

  5. Back-probe the power supply pins at the TMF controller to test voltage; if battery reads 12V but controller reads below 8V, check for high resistance in the wiring harness

Repair steps

  1. Clean Connections

Disconnect the battery cables and thoroughly clean the battery posts and terminals with a wire brush. Reconnect and tighten them securely.

  2. Clean Grounds

Remove the main ground strap from the tractor chassis, sand the mounting point down to bare metal, and reattach the ground strap tightly.

  3. Replace the Battery

If the battery failed the load test or drops below 8 volts during cranking, remove the battery hold-down, extract the old battery, and install a new OEM-spec battery.

  4. Replace the Alternator

If the alternator is failing to charge the battery, disconnect the battery, remove the serpentine/drive belt, disconnect the alternator wiring harness, unbolt the alternator, and install a replacement.

  5. Repair Wiring

If a voltage drop was found between the battery and the TMF controller, trace the wiring harness to locate the chafed wire or corroded connector. Splice in new wiring or replace the damaged connector pin, then clear the fault codes.
