New Holland TMF 80 – TMF (Tractor Multi-Function Controller): MFD fault condition in software
Issue description
Mechanical Front Drive software fault condition. This indicates a software logic error, memory loss, or configuration mismatch regarding the MFD (4WD / Front Wheel Assist) system. It typically occurs when the controller loses its configuration memory for the MFD switch, or when there is a software conflict between what the controller expects and what the armrest switch is broadcasting.

Check the cause
Check for associated configuration codes in the Armrest (ARM) controller, such as ARM 9014 (Controller Memory Error). If present, the issue is likely a lost configuration rather than a hard part failure.
Verify system voltage and check for battery voltage codes (TMF 64, TMF 65, or TMF 66). Low voltage during cranking or a failing battery can cause the TMF controller to temporarily lose its software configuration memory.
Inspect the physical MFD switch on the armrest to ensure it is functioning and not stuck in an illogical state, which can trigger software logic faults.
Inspect the 5-pin or 6-pin harness connectors at the TMF controller for corrosion, moisture, or loose pins that could interrupt CAN-bus communication between the Armrest and the TMF.

Connect Diagnostic Tool
Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) laptop to the tractor's diagnostic port.
Reconfigure the Controller
Navigate to the configuration menu for the TMF and Armrest controllers. Re-enter the correct tractor configuration, specifically ensuring the MFD (Mechanical Front Drive) presence and switch type are set to "Installed/Active."
Clear and Test
Clear the fault codes, cycle the ignition key off for 30 seconds, and turn it back on. Test the MFD engagement and disengagement.
Update Software
If the configuration is correct but the code persists, use the EST to flash the TMF controller with the latest software calibration file.
Replace the TMF (if necessary)
If the code returns immediately after a key cycle, or if the controller repeatedly fails to hold its configuration memory overnight, the TMF controller has suffered an internal EEPROM/memory failure and must be replaced.
