New Holland TMF 95 – TMF (Tractor Multifunction Controller): Steering angle sensor is above the expected operating range

Issue description

The controller is receiving a signal voltage from the steering angle sensor that is higher than the normal operating parameters. This condition typically points to a short to power in the sensor's wiring, an open ground circuit, or an internal failure of the sensor causing it to output excessive voltage.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the Connector: Locate the steering angle sensor and disconnect its harness connector (often designated as C014 in CNH schematics). Check for moisture, dirt, corrosion, or damaged pins.

  2. Test for Shorts/Opens: With the key OFF, use a multimeter to check the harness side of the connector. Test the signal, power, and ground pins for a short to a 12V power source or an open ground circuit.

  3. Check Live Data: If the wiring is intact, use the in-cab display (e.g., Intelliview IV) or a diagnostic tool to monitor the steering angle sensor voltage/counts while turning the steering wheel. Look for voltages that spike out of range or remain stuck high.

  4. Clear and Retest: Clear the fault code via the display menu (INFO > FAULTS) and turn the steering wheel to see if the code returns immediately, which confirms a hard fault rather than an intermittent glitch.

Repair steps

  1. Park the machine on a level surface, center the steering, turn off the engine, and remove the key.

  2. Locate the steering angle sensor.

    Location varies by model; it may be mounted on the front steering axle for MFD/Diff-lock monitoring or within the steering column for autoguidance systems.

  3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Remove the mounting bolts/hardware securing the sensor to its bracket or housing.

  5. Install the new OEM steering angle sensor and tighten the mounting hardware.

  6. Reconnect the electrical harness connector.

  7. Calibration (Crucial Step): Turn the key ON. You must recalibrate the new sensor using the tractor's display (e.g., Intelliview) or a dealer electronic service tool.

    The system must record the new Wheel Angle Sensor (WAS) counts for the center, full-left, and full-right steering positions.

  8. Clear the TMF 95 fault code and test drive the tractor to verify that autosteer, MFD (front-wheel assist), and auto-differential lock functions operate normally.
