TMF 98

New Holland TMF 98 – TMF Controller: Battery Voltage is too Low

Issue description

The 12VD voltage supply to the controller drops below 8 volts.

Applies to these machines

  • New Holland T8000 Series (T8010, T8020, T8030, T8040, T8050)
  • New Holland TG Series (TG215, TG245, TG275, TG305)
  • New Holland T9 Series

Check the cause

  1. Check for concurrent fault codes (ARM 8011, AUX/Hitch/PTO 65, 66, 99, or TRANS 70) indicating a systemic battery/charging issue

  2. Measure voltage directly at the battery terminals (should be >12 VDC resting, 12-14 VDC running)

  3. Verify the alternator regulator output is actively charging the battery

  4. Check system voltage directly at the TMF controller's power and ground connections to rule out voltage drop through the harness

Repair steps

  1. Charge the Battery

Put a battery charger on the battery to bring it up to a full charge before starting the tractor. Clear the codes and see if TMF 98 returns.

  2. Clean Connections

Clean the battery terminals, chassis ground connections, and the harness connectors at the TMF controller to ensure there is no corrosion causing a voltage drop.

  3. Replace the Battery

If the battery fails a load test or will not hold a charge above 12 volts, replace it.

  4. Repair/Replace the Alternator

If the tractor is running but the alternator is not outputting 13.5V–14.5V to the battery, replace the alternator or rebuild it using an alternator repair kit.

  5. Harness Repair

If the battery and alternator are functioning perfectly but the TMF controller is receiving less than 8 volts, trace the wiring harness for open circuits, chafing, or shorts to ground and repair as necessary.

  6. Replace the TMF Controller

If the controller is receiving proper voltage but still internally logging a low-voltage fault, the TMF module itself has failed and must be replaced or sent out for remanufacturing.
