New Holland TRANS 104 – Transmission Controller (TRANS / TCU): Even clutch solenoid or its wiring failed open or shorted to ground.

The Transmission Controller monitors the current draw from the even clutch solenoid circuit. If the current draw falls below a specific limit, the controller determines that the circuit is either open (broken wire/failed coil) or shorted to ground. If the issue is intermittent or temperature-sensitive, it often indicates that the solenoid coil is beginning to fail internally when it gets hot.

   Remove the controller cover from the rear of the tractor and visually inspect the wiring harness running from the transmission controller to the transmission valve block for chafing, pinched wires, or disconnected plugs.

   Disconnect the harness at the even clutch solenoid and measure the resistance across the solenoid pins (a healthy solenoid should measure around 10 ohms; infinite or near zero indicates failure).

   Measure the resistance between the transmission controller connector and the chassis ground to test for a short to ground (less than a few ohms indicates a short).

   Check for continuity between the transmission controller pin and the solenoid connector pin to test for an open circuit (no continuity indicates a broken wire).

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

   Locate the Solenoid

   Locate the powershift transmission control valve block. Identify the Even Clutch Solenoid (refer to your specific model's hydraulic schematic).

   Harness Repair (If Applicable)

   If your diagnostic tests revealed a wiring issue, trace the harness and repair the broken or chafed wire. Use heat-shrink connectors to ensure a weatherproof seal.

   Solenoid Replacement (If Applicable)

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty even clutch solenoid. Clean the area around the valve block to prevent dirt from entering the transmission. Remove the retaining nut or bolts holding the solenoid valve in place and pull the solenoid cartridge out of the valve block. Lubricate the new O-rings with clean transmission fluid and install them on the new solenoid valve. Insert the new solenoid valve into the block and torque the retaining nut/bolts to OEM specifications.

   Reassembly

   Reconnect the electrical harness to the new solenoid.

   Testing

   Reconnect the battery. Start the tractor, clear the stored TRANS 104 fault code via the instrument cluster or diagnostic tool, and test drive the machine through all gears to verify the even clutches engage properly and the code does not return.
