New Holland TRANS 109 – Transmission Control Module (TRANS): Low range clutch solenoid or its wiring failed open or shorted to ground

Issue description

The controller is detecting an electrical fault (either a broken connection/open circuit or a short circuit to the chassis ground) in the circuit responsible for actuating the low range clutch in the transmission.

Check the cause

  1. Check for other codes — if multiple transmission or voltage codes are present, the issue may be a shared ground or a main harness fault rather than the specific solenoid.

  2. Verify power supply — check that the tractor battery power supply has not been connected to an external power supply (like a booster), which can cause voltage spikes.

  3. Check system voltage — start the engine and check the battery voltage on the instrument cluster to rule out a faulty charging system.

  4. Inspect the wire harness — visually and electrically inspect the wire harness from the Transmission Control Module to the low range clutch solenoid. Test the circuit for continuity (open circuit) and continuity to ground (short circuit).

  5. Test the solenoid — test the resistance of the low range clutch solenoid coil with a multimeter to see if the internal coil has failed open or shorted.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent accidental shorts during repair.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the transmission control valve mounting plate on the side/top of the transmission housing. Identify the specific solenoid assigned to the 'Low Range' clutch (refer to the specific model's hydraulic/transmission schematic).

  3. Wiring Repair (If Applicable)

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or rubbed-through insulation shorting against the transmission case, repair the wiring harness using OEM-approved weather-sealed connectors.

  4. Remove the Solenoid

    If the wiring is intact but the solenoid tested bad, unplug the electrical connector from the low range clutch solenoid. Remove the retaining nut/fasteners and slide the solenoid coil off the valve stem, or remove the entire solenoid valve assembly depending on the specific transmission block design.

  5. Install the New Part

    Install the replacement solenoid or coil. Torque the retaining nut to the specification listed in your model's service manual.

  6. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical harness to the new solenoid. Reconnect the battery.

  7. Clear Codes and Calibrate

    Turn the key on, clear the TRANS 109 error code from the CCU, and test the system for normal operation. Note: Replacing transmission clutch solenoids often requires performing a transmission clutch calibration procedure via the tractor's display monitor before operating the machine.
