New Holland TRANS 114 – Transmission Control Module (TCU / TRANS): Even clutch solenoid coil or its wiring shorted to power

Issue description

The transmission controller is detecting +12V (or current flow) on the even clutch solenoid circuit while the driver is commanded OFF. This indicates a short circuit to a power source, which can occur internally within the solenoid coil itself or externally in the wiring harness.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the transmission controller to the powershift valve block for chafed insulation, melted wires, or pinch points.

  2. Perform a harness voltage test by disconnecting the electrical connector at the even clutch solenoid, turning the key ON (engine OFF), and probing the harness-side connector for +12V to check for a harness short.

  3. Measure the resistance across the pins of the even clutch solenoid to check for an internal short (a reading near zero ohms indicates a faulty coil).

  4. Inspect the transmission bulkhead connectors and controller connectors for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge a power circuit.

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical damage.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the powershift transmission control valve block. Identify the 'Even Clutch Solenoid' (refer to the valve block diagram in your specific model's service manual to ensure you do not remove the odd, master, or range clutch solenoids by mistake).

  3. Wiring Repair (If Applicable)

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a harness short, open the wire loom, locate the bridged/damaged wires, and repair them using automotive-grade heat-shrink butt connectors or replace the affected harness section.

  4. Solenoid Replacement (If Applicable)

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty even clutch solenoid. Remove the retaining hardware holding the solenoid in the valve block. Pull the solenoid straight out of the bore. Have a rag ready to catch residual transmission fluid. Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Carefully insert the new solenoid into the valve block bore, ensuring the O-rings are not pinched. Install and tighten the retaining hardware to the OEM torque specification.

  5. Reassembly and Calibration

    Reconnect the electrical connector and the battery. Use a diagnostic tool to clear the TRANS 114 fault code. Finally, perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure to ensure the new solenoid engages the even clutch pack smoothly.
