New Holland TRANS 12 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Master Clutch Potentiometer Short to +12 Volts or short to 5 Vreff

The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the clutch pedal position sensor (potentiometer) that is higher than the expected operating range. The system has detected that the sensor's signal wire is shorted directly to a 12-volt power source or to the 5-volt reference (Vref) circuit. Because of this short, the tractor's computer cannot accurately determine the physical position of the clutch pedal.

   Inspect the wiring harness from the clutch pedal potentiometer to the Transmission ECU for rubbed, pinched, or melted insulation.

   Disconnect the sensor at the pedal and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or bent pins.

   With the sensor unplugged and key ON, use a multimeter to check the signal wire on the harness side for 5V or 12V (indicates a harness short).

   If the harness tests good (no voltage on the signal line when unplugged), the potentiometer itself has failed internally.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical damage.

   Locate the Sensor

   Find the Master Clutch Potentiometer (clutch pedal position sensor) located at the pivot point/base of the clutch pedal assembly inside the cab.

   Remove the Old Sensor

   Unplug the electrical wiring harness pigtail from the sensor. Remove the mounting screws or bolts securing the sensor bracket to the pedal assembly and remove the unit.

   Install the New Sensor

   Mount the new potentiometer, ensuring that the rotary tang/mechanical linkage aligns perfectly with the clutch pedal's movement slot. Secure the mounting hardware.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical harness back into the sensor and reconnect the tractor's battery.

   Perform Clutch Calibration

   You cannot simply plug and play. Because the new sensor will have slightly different minimum and maximum voltage outputs, you must perform a transmission clutch calibration. This teaches the Transmission ECU the new bottom and top limits of the clutch pedal. This is done via the tractor's onboard H-menu/diagnostic screen or by using a diagnostic scan tool (like the CNH EST or Jaltest).
