New Holland TRANS 120 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Low range clutch solenoid coil or its wiring is shorted to power

Issue description

The transmission controller is detecting a higher-than-expected voltage on the circuit responsible for actuating the low range clutch. This condition is typically caused by a wiring harness shorting directly to a 12V power source, an internal short within the solenoid coil itself, or an overvoltage condition in the electrical system.

Check the cause

  1. Check for other active error codes to rule out a broader electrical issue or a shared ground/power fault

  2. Verify external power sources (ensure no jump box or high-output battery charger is connected causing a temporary overvoltage)

  3. Check charging system voltage by starting the engine and running it at 2000 RPM to ensure the alternator is not overcharging the system

  4. Inspect the wiring harness from the Transmission Control Unit to the low range clutch solenoid for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or melted connectors shorting to a 12V power wire

  5. Test the solenoid coil by disconnecting it and using a multimeter to measure resistance across the coil pins, comparing to OEM specifications to check for an internal short

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the low range clutch solenoid on the transmission control valve block (typically positioned on the side or top of the transmission housing/hydraulic distribution manifold).

  3. Repair Wiring

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to power in the harness, repair the damaged section of wiring using weather-sealed connectors, or replace the affected harness segment.

  4. Replace the Solenoid

    If the wiring is intact but the coil is internally shorted, disconnect the electrical plug from the solenoid. Remove the retaining nut/bolt and slide the faulty solenoid coil off the valve stem (or unthread the entire cartridge valve, depending on the specific transmission block design).

  5. Install New Part

    Install the replacement solenoid coil or valve assembly. Torque the retaining nut to OEM specifications.

  6. Reassembly

    Reconnect the weather-sealed electrical connector to the new solenoid. Reconnect the battery.

  7. Calibration and Testing

    Clear the TRANS 120 fault code using the tractor's diagnostic monitor. Start the tractor and perform a transmission calibration procedure as outlined in the operator's or repair manual. Test drive the machine to ensure the low range clutch engages smoothly without throwing the code.
