TRANS 128

New Holland TRANS 128 – Transmission Controller (TRANS / TCU): C3-4 clutch is not calibrated

Issue description

The transmission controller does not have the correct engagement parameters (fill time and pressure) saved in its memory for the C3-4 clutch pack, which can result in harsh shifting, slipping, or a complete loss of specific gears.

Applies to these machines

  • TG210
  • TG230
  • TG245
  • TG255
  • TG285
  • TG305
  • T8010
  • T8020
  • T8030
  • T8040
  • T8050
  • T9050
  • Magnum
  • MX/TG Series

Check the cause

  1. Check for related active electrical fault codes (e.g., TRANS 106) that would prevent calibration

  2. Inspect the transmission wiring harness and solenoid connectors for physical damage, corrosion, or loose connections

  3. Ensure the transmission fluid is at the correct level and the tractor is warmed up to normal operating temperature

Repair steps

  1. Prepare the Tractor

Park the tractor on a level surface, apply the parking brake, and ensure the transmission fluid is at operating temperature.

  2. Access Diagnostic Menus

Enter the tractor's diagnostic 'H' routines via the IntelliView monitor or the instrument cluster.

  3. Initiate Calibration

Navigate to the transmission calibration menu and select the clutch calibration procedure.

  4. Follow Prompts

Follow the on-screen prompts (which typically require setting engine RPM to a specific speed and shifting the shuttle lever) to allow the controller to automatically calibrate the fill times for the C3-4 clutch.

  5. Verify

Once the calibration is successfully completed, the controller will save the new values, and the TRANS 128 code should move from active to inactive/stored. Clear the stored codes.

  6. Mechanical Troubleshooting

If the calibration repeatedly fails, consult the service manual to split the speed/range transmission and inspect the C3-4 clutch solenoid, valve body, or the internal clutch pack (discs/seals) for mechanical failure.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • C3-4 Clutch Solenoid / Transmission Control Valve

Replace if the solenoid has failed electrically (often accompanied by TRANS 106) or is mechanically sticking.

  • Transmission Fluid & Filters

Required if fluid is contaminated or if the transmission must be opened for repair.

  • C3-4 Clutch Pack Components

Friction discs, steel plates, and seals. Required only if the clutch has suffered catastrophic mechanical failure preventing calibration.
