TRANS 129

New Holland TRANS 129 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): C5-6 clutch is not calibrated

Issue description

The transmission controller has lost the calibration values for the C5-6 clutch pack, or a calibration procedure was interrupted or failed to complete successfully. Without these values, the transmission controller cannot accurately modulate the clutch engagement, which can lead to harsh shifting, hesitation, or a failure to engage specific gears.

Applies to these machines

  • TG210
  • TG215
  • TG230
  • TG245
  • TG255
  • TG285
  • TG305
  • T8010
  • T8020
  • T8030
  • T8040
  • T9020
  • Magnum series
  • MX/TG series

Check the cause

  1. Check for related solenoid faults (e.g., TRANS 107, TRANS 2357). If present, inspect the wiring harness and test the C5-6 solenoid before proceeding.

  2. Check transmission fluid temperature. The optimal working temperature is around 176°F (80°C). Ensure no 'CL' (Cold Oil) or 'CH' (Hot Oil) warnings are displayed.

  3. Perform safety checks: ensure the tractor is parked on a level surface, parking brake is applied, wheels are chocked, and ground speed reads zero.

Repair steps

  1. Warm Up the Tractor

Start the tractor and operate the hydraulics/transmission until the transmission oil reaches the optimal temperature (approx. 176°F / 80°C).

  2. Enter Calibration Mode

Turn the tractor off. Hold the shift lever in the neutral/downshift position and turn the ignition key to the ON position (do not start the engine yet).

  3. Wait for Display Prompt

Watch the LCD display. Release the lever as soon as the display changes to show 'CAL' or 'cc' (or accesses the 'H1' calibration menu).

  4. Start the Engine

Once the calibration prompt is displayed, start the tractor.

  5. Run the Calibration

Follow the on-screen prompts to initiate the automatic clutch calibration or use the shift buttons to individually calibrate the C5-6 clutch. The electronic control unit will automatically modulate the valves to learn the fill times and engagement points.

  6. Save the Calibration

Once the calibration procedure is completed successfully, turn the ignition key OFF. This step is critical as it stores the new calibration values into the transmission controller's memory.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • C5-6 Clutch Solenoid

Replaced if the solenoid coil is burnt out or shorted, preventing the valve from stroking during calibration.

  • Transmission Fluid / Hydraulic Oil

Required if the fluid is burnt, degraded, or contaminated, which can cause erratic clutch engagement.

  • C5-6 Clutch Pack / Friction Discs

Replaced if the internal transmission clutches are physically worn beyond their operational tolerances, making calibration impossible.
