TRANS 136

New Holland TRANS 136 – Transmission Controller (TRANS): Communication lost with the instrumentation controller

Issue description

The CAN Bus communication link between the transmission controller and the instrumentation controller has been interrupted or lost.

Applies to these machines

  • TG210
  • TG215
  • TG230
  • TG245
  • TG255
  • TG285
  • T8030
  • T8040
  • TJ280-TJ530
  • T9010-T9060
  • T6010-T6070
  • T70 series
  • MXM / TM Series
  • Magnum 235-340
  • MX Magnum

Check the cause

  1. Verify both the transmission controller and the instrumentation controller are powering up and functioning correctly

  2. Inspect the CAN Bus wiring harness that runs between the transmission controller and the instrumentation controller

  3. Look for bad CAN Bus connections, such as corroded pins, loose terminals, or moisture intrusion at the controller harness plugs

  4. Ensure the tractor model configuration is set correctly in the instrumentation controller (ST MODEL parameters)

Repair steps

  1. Access the Controllers

Locate the Transmission Controller and the Instrumentation Controller (ICU2) on your specific tractor model.

  2. Harness Inspection & Repair

Disconnect the wiring harnesses from both controllers. Use a multimeter to check for continuity, shorts to ground, or shorts to power on the CAN Bus lines between the two modules.

  3. Clean Connections

Clean the mating pins and connectors thoroughly. Reconnect the harnesses and ensure they are seated and locked properly.

  4. Test Voltage/Ground

Verify that the instrumentation controller is receiving proper operating voltage (e.g., 8V or 12V depending on the pinout) and has a solid ground.

  5. Replace Faulty Component

If the wiring harness tests perfectly but communication cannot be established, one of the controllers has suffered an internal failure. Replace the faulty controller (usually the Instrumentation Controller if it fails to output reference voltages, or the Transmission Controller if it fails to send/receive data).

  6. Recalibrate/Configure

If a controller is replaced, use the electronic service tool to configure the new controller to the correct tractor model and clear the stored TRANS 136 fault code.
