TRANS 144

New Holland TRANS 144 – Transmission Controller (TRANS): Front suspension position is below the lower suspension range.

Issue description

The transmission controller monitors the front axle potentiometer (position sensor) circuit. If the controller detects that the sensor's voltage has dropped 0.62 Volts below the mid-calibrated point for 30 consecutive seconds, it logs this fault code.

Check the cause

  1. Verify tractor ballast and load to ensure excessive weight or a heavy rear implement is not unweighting the front or altering suspension geometry

  2. Inspect the front axle position sensor installation and mechanical linkage for damage, debris, or blockages preventing return to the midpoint

  3. Check for other active fault codes involving the Raise, Lower, Upper lock, and Lower lock solenoids, and ensure all suspension solenoids are securely connected

  4. Inspect the hydraulic system supplying the front suspension, ensuring accumulators are properly charged with nitrogen and hydraulic pressure/flow are within spec

Repair steps

  1. Clear and Calibrate

Clear the fault codes and attempt to run the front suspension travel range calibration via the tractor's instrument cluster/armrest menu.

  2. Visual Inspection

If calibration fails, physically inspect the front axle position sensor (potentiometer) and its linkage rod for bending, binding, or disconnection.

  3. Test Sensor Voltage

Back-probe the sensor to verify voltage sweeps smoothly as the suspension moves. If the voltage is erratic, stuck, or dead, the sensor must be replaced.

  4. Hydraulic/Accumulator Test

If the sensor reads correctly but the suspension physically cannot lift into the normal range, test the hydraulic pressure at the suspension block and check the accumulators. Replace flat accumulators or faulty raise/lower solenoids as necessary.

  5. Recalibrate

After replacing the sensor or repairing the hydraulic issue, you must perform the front suspension calibration procedure to teach the Transmission Controller the new upper, lower, and mid-points.
