New Holland TRANS 148 – TRANS: Backup alarm circuit shorted or open
Issue description
The controller has detected an electrical anomaly in the circuit responsible for powering the reverse/backup alarm buzzer. The system is seeing either a lack of continuity (an open circuit, such as a broken wire or disconnected plug) or a short circuit (a wire rubbing against the chassis ground or shorting to another power source).

Check the cause
Locate the backup alarm at the rear of the machine and check for obvious physical damage, mud/debris packing, or a disconnected electrical plug
Trace the wiring harness from the backup alarm back toward the transmission controller, looking for pinched wires, chafing against the frame, or corrosion inside connectors
Disconnect the backup alarm and use a digital multimeter to check the resistance of the alarm itself (an infinite reading indicates an internal open/blown alarm)
Check the backup alarm pressure switch/reverse switch on the transmission to ensure it is properly sending the reverse signal
With the key ON (engine OFF) and the machine shifted into reverse, check for 12V power and a good ground at the backup alarm connector
Repair steps
Secure the Machine
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn the engine off. Turn the ignition key to the ON position (without starting the engine).
Isolate the Fault
Disconnect the wiring harness at the backup alarm.
Test for Voltage
Shift the transmission into reverse. Using a multimeter, probe the harness connector for voltage. If 12V is present, the backup alarm itself has failed internally and must be replaced. If 12V is NOT present, the issue lies upstream.
Inspect Switches and Wiring
If there is no voltage, locate the backup alarm pressure switch on the transmission block. Test the switch for continuity when the tractor is in reverse. If the switch fails to close, replace the pressure switch.
Repair Wiring
If the switch is good, use your multimeter to perform a continuity test on the wires between the TRANS module, the pressure switch, and the alarm. Repair any broken wires or re-pin any corroded connectors.
Reassembly and Clearing
Plug the new alarm or repaired harness back in. Cycle the key, clear the stored TRANS 148 fault code via the armrest display/diagnostic menu, and shift into reverse to verify the alarm sounds and the code does not return.
