New Holland TRANS 2011 – Transmission Control Module (TCU): Clutch Pot Open Circuit or short to ground

Issue description

The control module has lost the electrical signal from the clutch pedal potentiometer. The system is detecting either a broken connection/wire (open circuit) or a signal wire that is shorting directly to the chassis ground. Because of this, the tractor's computer cannot determine the physical position of the clutch pedal, which disables or severely impairs transmission shifting and inching control.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the clutch pedal assembly and the potentiometer mounting for physical damage, loose brackets, or disconnected linkages.

  2. Check the wiring harness leading to the clutch potentiometer for chafing, pinched wires, or a loose/corroded electrical connector.

  3. Verify that the potentiometer is receiving its 5-volt reference power and has a solid ground. Check the signal wire to ensure it is not shorted to ground.

  4. Enter the tractor's diagnostic mode (on many New Holland models, this is the "H" menu). Use the H9 (Volt Meter) or HA (Clutch Pedal Position) routines to view the live voltage reading of the clutch potentiometer. If the reading is missing, stuck at zero, or wildly out of range while moving the pedal, the sensor is dead.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the clutch potentiometer, which is mounted directly to the pivot point of the clutch pedal assembly in the cab.

  3. Removal

    Unplug the electrical connector from the potentiometer. Remove the retaining screws or bolts holding the sensor to the pedal bracket and slide the old unit off the pivot shaft.

  4. Installation

    Install the new OEM potentiometer. Ensure that the mechanical tang/linkage aligns perfectly with the slot on the clutch pedal pivot so it sweeps correctly as the pedal moves. Secure the mounting hardware.

  5. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical harness back into the sensor and reconnect the battery.

  6. Mandatory Calibration

    You must perform a clutch pedal calibration routine using the tractor's display screen or diagnostic tool. The transmission controller needs to learn the new voltage values for the "fully released" and "fully depressed" pedal positions. Failure to calibrate will result in poor shifting, jerky inching, or secondary fault codes (such as TRANS 2024: "none of the Transmission clutches are calibrated").
