TRANS 2071

New Holland TRANS 2071 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Forward switch input from the FNRP Pod is shorted to ground or is open circuit

Issue description

The FNRP (Forward/Neutral/Reverse/Park) pod is the shuttle lever assembly mounted on the steering column. The transmission controller is detecting that the electrical circuit specifically for the "Forward" position switch is either broken (open circuit) or has a path directly to ground (shorted).

Applies to these machines

  • New Holland T8.xxx Series
  • New Holland T8.275
  • New Holland T8.300
  • New Holland T8.330
  • New Holland T8.360
  • New Holland T8.390
  • New Holland T8.410
  • New Holland T8.435

Check the cause

  1. Rapidly cycle the FNRP shuttle lever through all positions to free up potentially stuck switch contacts

  2. Try driving the tractor in Reverse to isolate the problem strictly to the forward switch circuit

  3. Shift the lever and watch the instrumentation display to see if the controller registers any movement

  4. Inspect the wiring harness from the FNRP pod down the steering column to the transmission controller for pinched wires, chafing, or disconnected plugs

Repair steps

  1. Power down the tractor and disconnect the battery

Power down the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Remove the upper and lower FNRP pod covers

Remove the upper and lower FNRP pod covers on the steering column to access the switch module and wiring.

  3. Disconnect the electrical harness connector

Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the FNRP pod.

  4. Remove the retaining bolt

Remove the retaining bolt that secures the FNRP pod to the steering column.

  5. Slide the old FNRP pod off the column

Slide the old FNRP pod off the column.

  6. Install the new FNRP pod

Install the new FNRP pod. Crucial Alignment Step: Ensure that the tab on the new FNRP pod fits perfectly into the designated slot on the steering column. If misaligned, the pod will not seat correctly and the steering wheel may rub on or bind with the pod.

  7. Tighten the securing bolt and reconnect the electrical harness

Tighten the securing bolt and reconnect the electrical harness.

  8. Reinstall the upper and lower steering column covers

Reinstall the upper and lower steering column covers.

  9. Reconnect the battery, power on the tractor, and clear the fault codes

Reconnect the battery, power on the tractor, and clear the fault codes. Test forward and reverse engagement.
