TRANS 2326

New Holland TRANS 2326 – Transmission Controller (TRANS): The Engine RPM sourced from the alternator measured by the controller is excessively high.

Issue description

The controller is receiving an erratic, distorted, or impossibly high frequency signal from the alternator's RPM output (commonly the "W" terminal, which provides an AC pulse signal used to calculate engine hours and RPM). This is often caused by a failing voltage regulator, AC ripple leaking past bad rectifier diodes, or a wiring short.

Check the cause

  1. Check Alternator Output Voltage: With the engine running at idle, measure the voltage across the battery terminals. A healthy alternator produces 13.8 to 14.4 volts. If it is above 14.8 volts, the voltage regulator is failing and overcharging, which can distort the RPM signal.

  2. Check for AC Ripple: A flickering dashboard lamp or erratic RPM signal often suggests alternating-current (AC) ripple is leaking past the alternator's rectifier diodes.

  3. Inspect the 'W' Terminal Wiring: Inspect the wire connected to the alternator's 'W' terminal (tach/RPM sense wire) for rodent damage, chafing, or a short to another voltage source.

  4. Check Alternator Belt: Ensure the decoupler pulley and belt are not slipping or damaged.

Repair steps

  1. Lower Engine Speed

    Decrease the engine RPM to approximately 1200 rev/min to see if the excessively high signal normalizes or if the code status changes.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If diagnostic checks reveal rodent damage or chafing on the tachometer sense wire (W terminal) leading to the transmission controller, repair the wiring harness and insulate the connection.

  3. Replace the Alternator

    If the wiring is intact but the alternator is overcharging (above 14.8V) or leaking AC ripple, the internal regulator/rectifier has failed. The alternator must be replaced (these are internally regulated units, so the whole assembly is typically swapped).

  4. Clear Codes

    Once the mechanical repair is complete, use a diagnostic tool to clear the TRANS 2326 error code from the ECU and test the tractor under load to ensure normal operation.
