TRANS 2346

New Holland TRANS 2346 – Transmission Controller (TRANS / ATC / TECU / XCM): Clutch 5-6 solenoid open circuit or short to ground

Issue description

The transmission controller has detected an electrical fault in the circuit responsible for operating the Clutch 5-6 (or Clutch E) solenoid. The system is seeing either a complete break in the wiring (open circuit) or a wire that is inappropriately touching the chassis/ground (short to ground).

Applies to these machines

  • New Holland T7 Series (T7.170 through T7.270)
  • New Holland T8 Series (T8.275 through T8.435)
  • New Holland T9 Series

Check the cause

  1. Check the solenoid resistance by disconnecting the electrical connector (C024) and measuring between terminal A and B (should be 6 to 8 Ohms)

  2. Check the wiring harness for continuity between the central controller (XCM) connectors (C533, C535, or C537) and the solenoid connector

  3. Test the harness wires for continuity to ground to ensure the insulation hasn't rubbed through against the tractor frame

  4. Inspect connectors for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or moisture inside the solenoid and controller connectors

Repair steps

  1. Secure the Machine

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn the key to the OFF position.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

Locate the transmission control valve block on the side of the transmission housing and identify the Clutch 5-6 (Clutch E) solenoid.

  3. Remove the Faulty Solenoid

If the diagnostic resistance test failed (outside of 6-8 Ohms), disconnect the wiring harness. Remove the retaining nut or bolt holding the solenoid coil to the valve stem, and slide the old solenoid off.

  4. Install the New Solenoid

Slide the replacement solenoid onto the valve stem and secure it with the retaining hardware.

  5. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

If the solenoid tested fine during diagnostics, repair or replace the damaged section of the wiring harness that is causing the open or shorted circuit.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

Turn the key ON. Use the tractor's H-menu (on-board diagnostics) or a dealer service tool to clear the stored TRANS 2346 error code. Start the tractor and test the transmission by cycling the shuttle lever and shifting through the ranges to ensure normal operation and that the code does not return.
