TRANS 2349

New Holland TRANS 2349 – TRANS: Clutch High Range solenoid open circuit or short to ground.

Issue description

The transmission controller has detected an electrical fault in the circuit responsible for actuating the High Range clutch. The system is either seeing a break in the wiring/internal solenoid coil (open circuit) or the voltage is being routed directly to the chassis ground (short to ground), preventing the solenoid from engaging the clutch pack.

Check the cause

  1. Verify system voltage: Ensure the tractor's battery voltage is sufficient, as low voltage can trigger false solenoid codes and prevent proper engagement.

  2. Inspect transmission fluid: Check if the fluid is dark or has an acrid, burnt smell, which indicates the electrical failure may have caused the High Range clutch pack to slip and burn out.

  3. Test wiring harness: Inspect the wiring harness running from the Transmission Controller to the High Range clutch solenoid on the transmission valve block for chafed wires, melted insulation, or corroded connector pins.

  4. Perform multimeter testing: Disconnect the solenoid and measure the resistance across the solenoid coil pins. If the reading is infinite (OL), the coil is internally open. Test the pins against the tractor chassis to check for a short to ground.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Always disconnect the batteries prior to performing any electrical or transmission work on the equipment to prevent accidental shorts.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the transmission hydraulic control valve block (usually accessible from the side of the transmission housing) and identify the High Range clutch proportional solenoid.

  3. Harness Repair (If Applicable)

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken or shorted wire in the harness, splice and repair the damaged section using weather-sealed connectors.

  4. Remove the Solenoid

    If the wiring is intact but the solenoid failed the resistance test, disconnect its electrical plug. Remove the retaining bolts/clips holding the solenoid to the valve body and carefully pull the solenoid out.

  5. Install New Parts

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid (or rebuilt valve using a repair kit) with clean transmission fluid. Insert it into the valve body and torque the retaining hardware to OEM specifications.

  6. Reassemble and Power Up

    Reconnect the electrical harness and reconnect the tractor's batteries.

  7. Recalibrate the Transmission

    After replacing transmission solenoids, you must perform a transmission clutch calibration routine (using the tractor's onboard diagnostic menu or a dealer service tool) to ensure the controller learns the proper engagement pressures and timing for the new component.
