New Holland TRANS 2356 – Transmission Control Module (TCU / TRANS): C5-6 clutch solenoid shorted to +12 Volts

Current is being sensed while the driver (the output circuit from the controller) is commanded off, pointing to a short-to-power in the wiring harness or an internal short within the solenoid itself.

   Inspect the transmission wiring harness leading to the C5-6 (Clutch E) solenoid for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched areas where the solenoid control wire might be shorting to a +12V power source.

   Disconnect the solenoid and the transmission controller. Check the pins for corrosion, moisture, or bent terminals that could bridge the power and control circuits.

   Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the C5-6 solenoid pins. Compare the reading to OEM specifications to determine if the solenoid coil is internally shorted.

   With the solenoid disconnected and the key ON (engine off), probe the control wire at the solenoid connector to see if +12V is present. If voltage is present while the controller is disconnected, the harness is shorted to power.

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent accidental short circuits during repair.

   Locate the Solenoid

   Locate the C5-6 (Clutch E) solenoid on the transmission control valve block (often found on the internal side of the transmission side cover or bell housing).

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a short in the wiring harness, repair the damaged section using proper splice connectors and heat shrink, or replace the affected harness section.

   Replace the Solenoid

   If the solenoid tested out of specification (internally shorted), remove the retaining bolt/clip, pull the old solenoid from the valve block, and install the new replacement solenoid. Ensure the O-rings are lubricated with clean transmission fluid before seating.

   Reassemble and Reconnect

   Reconnect the solenoid electrical connector and reconnect the battery.

   Clear Codes and Calibrate

   Clear the TRANS 2356 fault code using a diagnostic tool and perform a Transmission Clutch Calibration (specifically for Clutch E / C5-6) to ensure proper engagement pressures and shift quality.
