New Holland TRANS 2357 – Transmission Control Module (TRANS) / Central Control Unit (CCU): Low clutch Solenoid is shorted to +12 Volts, current sensed while driver is off

Issue description

The transmission controller is detecting voltage/current on the circuit for the Low Range Clutch Solenoid when the controller is not actively commanding the solenoid to turn on. This points to a short to power (+12V) in the wiring, an internal short in the solenoid, or an overcharging issue.

Check the cause

  1. Check for other error codes: If multiple over-voltage codes are present, the issue is likely systemic rather than a single failed solenoid.

  2. Check for external power supplies: Verify that the tractor battery has not been connected to an external power supply (such as a jump box or high-amp battery charger), which can artificially spike voltage.

  3. Test the charging system: Start the engine and run it at 2000 RPM. Check the battery voltage on the instrument cluster to ensure the alternator is not overcharging the system.

  4. Inspect the wiring harness: Trace the wiring harness from the Central Control Unit (CCU) to the Low Range Clutch Solenoid. Look for chafed wires that may be shorting to a +12V power source.

  5. Test the solenoid: Check the internal resistance of the Low Range Clutch Solenoid to see if the coil has shorted internally.

  6. Test the CCU: If the wiring and solenoid test fine, the Central Control Unit itself may have an internal fault sending uncommanded voltage.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the tractor and disconnect any external battery chargers or jump packs.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If a short to +12V is found in the harness during diagnostics, repair the damaged wire or replace the affected harness section.

  3. Replace Solenoid

    If the wiring is intact but the solenoid is internally shorted, locate the Low Range Clutch Solenoid on the transmission powershift valve manifold. Disconnect the electrical connector, remove the retaining hardware, and extract the faulty solenoid.

  4. Install New Solenoid

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid, install it into the manifold, and torque to OEM specifications. Reconnect the harness.

  5. Clear Codes

    Use the instrument cluster or a diagnostic tool to clear the stored fault codes (EEPROM) from the CCU.

  6. Perform Calibration

    After replacing a transmission clutch solenoid, you must perform a transmission clutch calibration (specifically the 'Low clutch solenoid quick fill adjustment') to ensure smooth shifting and prevent mechanical damage.
