TRANS 2358

New Holland TRANS 2358 – Transmission Control Module: Mid Clutch Solenoid is shorted to +12 Volts, and current is sensed while the driver is off

Issue description

The control module is detecting electrical current flowing through the Mid Clutch Solenoid circuit even when the module's internal driver is in the OFF state. This condition is typically caused by a wiring harness short-circuit to a battery power source (+12V) or an internal short within the solenoid coil itself.

Check the cause

  1. Harness Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness running from the Transmission ECU to the range transmission powershift valve manifold. Look for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or melted loom that could cause the solenoid control wire to short against a +12V power wire.

  2. Isolate the Short: Disconnect the electrical connector at the Mid Clutch Solenoid. Turn the key ON and use a multimeter to check the harness-side connector for +12V on the control circuit. If voltage is present while the tractor is not commanding the clutch, the wiring harness is shorted.

  3. Solenoid Coil Test: If the harness tests good, check the resistance of the Mid Clutch Solenoid coil. An internal failure in the solenoid can cause abnormal current draw or shorting.

  4. Check for Related Codes: Check if other clutch solenoids (e.g., High Clutch, Low Clutch) are throwing similar over-voltage/short codes (like 2359 or 2360), which would strongly indicate a shared wiring harness rub-through rather than a single failed solenoid.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical spikes during the repair.

  2. Locate the Valve Manifold

Locate the range transmission powershift valve manifold, which is mounted on top of the range transmission.

  3. Remove the Solenoid

Disconnect the electrical connector from the Mid Clutch Solenoid. Clean the area around the valve to prevent debris from entering the transmission. Unscrew and remove the faulty solenoid cartridge valve from the manifold.

  4. Install the New Part

Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Thread the new solenoid into the manifold and tighten to OEM torque specifications.

  5. Reconnect and Reassemble

Reconnect the electrical connector and reconnect the battery.

  6. Clear Codes and Calibrate

Turn the key ON and clear the stored TRANS 2358 fault code from the Transmission module.

  7. Perform Clutch Calibration

You must perform a transmission clutch calibration (specifically the 'Mid clutch solenoid quick fill adjustment') using the tractor's electronic display/diagnostic menu to ensure smooth shifting and proper engagement of the new valve.
