New Holland TRANS 2812 – TCU: Trans Oil Temp Sensor Short/Open

Issue description

The control module is reading a voltage signal from the transmission oil temperature sensor that is higher than the normal operating range. This indicates an open circuit, an unplugged connector, a wire shorting directly to a 12V power source (B+), or an internal sensor failure. Without accurate temperature data, the transmission controller cannot properly adjust clutch fill times, which may cause the tractor to react abruptly or shift harshly.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the transmission oil temperature sensor (often located on the side of the transmission housing or near the transmission oil filter), wiring harness, and connector for physical damage, corrosion, or a loose connection.

  2. Perform a wiring continuity and short test by disconnecting the sensor and verifying the signal wire has continuity back to the Transmission Controller and is not shorted to a 12V power source or ground.

  3. Conduct a sensor resistance test by measuring the resistance (Ohms) across the two terminals of the disconnected sensor. Compare to ambient temperature: 70°F (21°C) = ~5.5K Ohms, 90°F (32°C) = ~3.3K Ohms, 110°F (43°C) = ~2K Ohms, 130°F (54°C) = ~835 Ohms. A reading of 'OL' or zero indicates internal failure.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare tractor

    Turn the tractor's ignition key to the OFF position and engage the parking brake.

  2. Clean sensor area

    Clean the area around the transmission oil temperature sensor to prevent dirt from entering the transmission housing.

  3. Disconnect sensor

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Place catch pan

    Place a clean catch pan underneath the sensor location, as a small amount of transmission fluid may leak out during removal.

  5. Remove faulty sensor

    Unscrew and remove the faulty sensor from the transmission housing.

  6. Install new sensor

    Thread the new OEM transmission oil temperature sensor into the port and tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  7. Reconnect sensor

    Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring it clicks securely into place.

  8. Refill fluid

    Top off the transmission fluid if a significant amount was lost.

  9. Clear codes and test

    Turn the ignition on, clear the fault codes using your diagnostic tool or instrument cluster interface, and test-drive the tractor to ensure smooth shifting and that the code does not return.
