New Holland TRANS 2813 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) / TRANS: Transmission oil temperature Sensor Short to Ground

Issue description

The controller is receiving a voltage signal from the transmission oil temperature sensor that is too low (essentially 0 volts). This indicates that the sensor's signal circuit is shorting directly to a ground source, either due to an internal failure within the sensor itself or a compromised wiring harness touching the machine's chassis.

Check the cause

  1. Turn the starter key to the OFF position before beginning diagnostics.

  2. Locate the transmission oil temperature sensor on the transmission housing and visually inspect the wiring harness for chafing, melted insulation, or bare wires touching the metal frame (short to ground cause).

  3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor. Using a digital multimeter, check the signal wire on the harness side for continuity to ground. If the wire is grounded while unplugged, the wiring harness is pinched or shorted and needs repair.

  4. If the harness tests fine, the internal thermistor of the sensor has likely failed and shorted internally (sensor failure cause).

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and remove the key.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Depending on the model, you may need to remove a rear wheel (e.g., rear left-hand wheel on TL series) or access panels to reach the sensor on the transmission housing.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

    Unplug the electrical connector from the transmission oil temperature sensor.

  4. Catch Pan

    Place a clean drain pan under the sensor port, as removing the sensor will cause a small amount of transmission oil to leak out.

  5. Remove Sensor

    Unscrew the faulty temperature sensor from the transmission housing.

  6. Install New Sensor

    Thread the new OEM sensor into the port and tighten it securely.

  7. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical wiring harness back into the new sensor.

  8. Fluid Check

    Check the transmission oil level and top off any fluid that was lost during the swap.

  9. Clear Codes

    Turn the tractor on and use the instrument cluster or a diagnostic tool to clear the TRANS 2813 fault code. Verify that the transmission temperature is reading correctly and the code does not return.
