TRANS 2815

New Holland TRANS 2815 – Transmission Controller (ATC / Trans module): Governor Engine RPM alternator engine RPM mismatch

Issue description

This fault code indicates a discrepancy between two engine speed signals. The Transmission Controller compares the engine RPM broadcast by the Engine ECU (Governor) over the CAN bus with the engine RPM calculated from the alternator's speed signal output (typically the W terminal). If the alternator's RPM signal does not match the engine's actual RPM within a specific tolerance, the system logs this mismatch.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the alternator drive belt for looseness, glazing, or slipping, which can cause the alternator to spin slower than the engine.

  2. Check the automatic belt tensioner to ensure it is applying adequate pressure to the belt (a weak spring causes slipping under load).

  3. Inspect alternator wiring at the W terminal (speed signal) and B+ terminal for loose nuts, corrosion, or broken wires.

  4. Test alternator output to verify it is charging correctly and outputting a clean AC ripple, as internal diode failure can drop the speed signal.

  5. Check for other CAN bus communication codes (such as TRANS 2817 or 2818) that might indicate a wiring harness issue between the Engine ECU and Transmission Controller.

Repair steps

  1. Replace the Belt (If Slipping)

If the alternator/fan drive belt is worn, cracked, or slipping, relieve the tension on the belt tensioner and remove the old belt. Route the new 8-rib serpentine belt according to the engine diagram and release the tensioner.

  2. Repair Wiring

If the W terminal wire is damaged or corroded, clean the terminal stud, replace the ring terminal on the wire if necessary, and tighten it securely to restore the speed signal.

  3. Replace the Alternator

If the belt is tight and the wiring is intact but the alternator is failing to output the correct speed signal, the alternator must be replaced. Disconnect the negative battery cable, remove the serpentine belt, disconnect the electrical connections at the alternator, and unbolt the unit from the engine bracket. Install the new alternator and torque the mounting bolts to spec.

  4. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the TRANS 2815 fault code. Test drive the tractor under load to ensure the code does not return.
