TRANS 2816

New Holland TRANS 2816 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Transmission regulated pressure accumulator is flat

Issue description

The transmission regulated pressure accumulator has lost its gas pre-charge (due to a ruptured internal bladder/diaphragm or a leaking gas valve), preventing it from absorbing pressure spikes or maintaining pressure during clutch engagement.

Applies to these machines

  • New Holland T8.xxx Series (T8.275, T8.320, T8.390, T8.410)
  • New Holland T7 series
  • New Holland T6 series
  • New Holland T5 series
  • New Holland TM series
  • New Holland TS series

Check the cause

  1. Check for associated low-pressure codes, such as TRANS 2820 or TRANS 2821, which often accompany a flat accumulator.

  2. Inspect the transmission control manifold and the accumulator itself for external hydraulic fluid leaks.

  3. Use a hydraulic accumulator test kit to check the nitrogen pre-charge pressure of the accumulator (should be around 140 Bar / 145 PSI depending on the exact model).

  4. Monitor regulated transmission pressure during shifting using a diagnostic tool or manual gauge to check for severe pressure drops.

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Pressure

Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and actuate the hydraulic valves to relieve all residual hydraulic pressure in the system.

  2. Locate the Accumulator

Locate the transmission regulated pressure accumulator, typically threaded into the side of the transmission control valve block/manifold.

  3. Remove the Accumulator

Carefully unscrew the flat accumulator. Have a catch pan ready, as a small amount of hydraulic fluid will leak out.

  4. Install the New Accumulator

Verify the new accumulator is pre-charged to the correct specification. Lubricate the O-ring/seal with clean hydraulic fluid and thread the new accumulator into the manifold. Tighten to the OEM torque specification.

  5. Clear Codes and Test

Top off the transmission hydraulic fluid if necessary. Start the tractor, check for leaks, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the TRANS 2816 fault code.

  6. Calibrate Clutches

Perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure before returning the tractor to the field.
