New Holland TRANS 2817 – Transmission Controller (TCU): Governor is offline CAN bus

The Transmission Control Unit has lost Controller Area Network (CAN) bus communication with the Engine Governor (managed by the Engine Control Unit / ECU).

   Check for accompanying CAN bus communication codes (such as TRANS 2818 or TRANS 2819) to determine if the entire CAN network is down or if the issue is isolated to the engine governor.

   Verify the power and ground supply to the Engine ECU, as a loss of power will cause it to drop off the CAN bus.

   Test the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the Engine ECU and the Transmission Controller for continuity, shorts to ground, or shorts to voltage.

   Measure the resistance across the CAN bus network with the battery disconnected (a healthy CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms).

   Inspect the wiring harness connectors at both the Transmission Controller and the Engine ECU for moisture, corrosion, or backed-out pins.

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical shorts or module damage during the repair.

   Access the Modules

   Locate the Transmission Controller (often located in the right-hand console or under the cab floor depending on the model) and the Engine ECU (mounted on or near the engine block).

   Clean and Reseat Connections

   Disconnect the harness connectors at both modules. Clean the pins with electrical contact cleaner and ensure no pins are bent or pushed back into the connector housing. Reconnect them securely.

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic continuity test revealed an open or shorted CAN wire, trace the harness along the chassis. Repair the damaged section of the CAN bus wiring by soldering and heat-shrinking the connection, or replace the affected harness section.

   Restore Power and Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition to the ON position. Use a CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or compatible diagnostic scanner to clear the TRANS 2817 code.

   Module Replacement (If Necessary)

   If the wiring, power, and grounds are all intact but the code immediately returns, the CAN transceiver inside either the Engine ECU or the Transmission Controller has failed. The faulty module must be replaced and reprogrammed/calibrated by a dealer.
