TRANS 2903

New Holland TRANS 2903 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Torque sensor supply voltage below 4.8 volts tolerance (CCH Only)

Issue description

The 5-volt reference circuit supplying power to the transmission torque sensor has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold of 4.8 volts. This is typically caused by a short to ground in the wiring harness, a corroded connector, or an internal short within the sensor itself that is pulling the reference voltage down.

Check the cause

  1. Verify overall system voltage and check the transmission controller fuses to ensure the TCU is receiving proper power.

  2. Disconnect the torque sensor 3-pin connector and measure the supply voltage pin on the harness side with the key ON (engine off). It should read a steady 5.0 volts.

  3. If voltage is below 4.8V with the sensor unplugged (harness/TCU issue): Inspect the wiring harness for chafing, pinched wires, or a short to ground between the sensor and the TCU.

  4. If voltage returns to 5.0V when unplugged but drops when plugged back in (sensor issue): The torque sensor has an internal short and must be replaced.

  5. Inspect the 3-pin connector at the torque sensor for moisture, dirt, or bent pins that could cause high resistance.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    The torque sensor is typically mounted on the transmission housing, near the hydraulic pump drive gear and PTO drive assembly.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

    Unplug the 3-pin female electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Remove the Sensor

    Clean the area around the sensor base to prevent debris from falling into the transmission housing. Remove the mounting hardware and carefully extract the old sensor.

  5. Install the New Sensor

    Insert the new OEM torque sensor into the housing and tighten the mounting hardware to the specified torque.

  6. Reconnect

    Plug the 3-pin wiring harness back into the sensor, ensuring the weather seal clicks into place.

  7. Calibrate

    Reconnect the battery and power on the tractor. Clear the TRANS 2903 fault code using the cab display or a diagnostic tool. You may need to perform a transmission/flywheel torque sensor calibration procedure so the TCU can learn the new sensor's baseline.
