TRANS 61

New Holland TRANS 61 – Transmission Controller (TCU / ATC): System pressure valve solenoid circuit is open circuit or shorted to ground.

Issue description

The controller is unable to properly command or monitor the transmission's system pressure because the electrical circuit to the solenoid is either broken (open) or making an unintended connection to the chassis ground (shorted).

Applies to these machines

  • T8 series
  • TM series (TM115 through TM190)
  • TS series
  • T6000 series
  • T7 series
  • Magnum series (Series 4 235-340)
  • Maxxum series
  • B90B
  • LB110

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the system pressure valve solenoid coil for internal shorts or an open circuit

  2. Test the wiring harness between the system pressure valve solenoid and the transmission controller for an open circuit, short to ground, or short to power

  3. Evaluate the transmission controller if the solenoid and wiring both test within normal parameters

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Solenoid

Find the system pressure valve solenoid, which is typically positioned directly within the main powershift transmission control block or hydraulic distribution manifold.

  2. Inspect Connections

Disconnect the sealed dual-pin wiring plug at the solenoid. Inspect the connector for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.

  3. Test the Coil

Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the solenoid pins. If the coil reads as an open circuit (infinite resistance) or a dead short, the solenoid must be replaced.

  4. Harness Continuity Test

If the solenoid is good, trace the wiring harness back to the transmission controller. Perform a continuity test and check for shorts to the chassis ground. Repair any chafed, broken, or melted wires.

  5. Replace the Solenoid

If faulty, unbolt the faulty solenoid valve from the transmission control block, lubricate the O-rings on the new spool valve, and install the replacement component.

  6. Controller Replacement

If the wiring harness and solenoid are both in perfect working order, the transmission controller has failed and will need to be replaced or reprogrammed.

  7. Clear Codes

Clear the TRANS 61 code from the system and test-drive the machine to ensure smooth gear shifting under load.
