TRANS 73

New Holland TRANS 73 – Transmission Controller (TRANS / TCU): Software is out of the calibration mode and the park brake request is still active

Issue description

The transmission control system has exited its calibration routine, but the internal logic or signal requesting the park brake to be engaged has not cleared. Official diagnostic documentation explicitly notes: 'If this fault is detected there is a bug in the software.'

Applies to these machines

  • New Holland T8 Series
  • New Holland T9 Series / T9000 Series
  • New Holland TG Series
  • New Holland TM Series

Check the cause

  1. Determine if a transmission or park brake calibration was recently performed, interrupted, or aborted, which may have triggered the software bug.

  2. Turn the tractor off, wait for the modules to power down completely, and restart to see if the software clears the stuck park brake request on reboot.

  3. Use the diagnostic tool to check the current software version on the Transmission Controller.

  4. Verify the physical park brake switch and its wiring to ensure it is not shorted or physically stuck, which could mimic the software holding the request active.

Repair steps

  1. Cycle Power

Perform a hard key cycle to reset the Transmission Controller.

  2. Update Software

Connect the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST). Because this is a documented software bug, reflash/update the Transmission Controller with the latest software version provided by the manufacturer.

  3. Recalibrate

Once the software is updated, initiate and complete a full transmission and park brake calibration procedure. Ensure the calibration is not interrupted.

  4. Clear Codes

Clear the TRANS 73 fault code from the module's memory.

  5. Operational Test

Engage and disengage the park brake normally and shift through gears to ensure the code does not return and the park brake releases properly.
