TRANS 75

New Holland TRANS 75 – Transmission Controller (TRANS / TCU): Engine speed from Inst Controller does not match the speed signal from the alternator.

Issue description

The Transmission Controller constantly compares the primary engine speed sensor signal (broadcast by the Instrumentation Controller) with the AC frequency signal from the alternator's 'W' terminal. If the RPM calculated from the alternator drops below or mismatches the RPM reported by the Instrumentation Controller by a specific threshold, the system logs TRANS 75.

Check the cause

  1. Check the alternator drive belt for slipping, glazing, or wear, which can cause the alternator to spin slower than the engine.

  2. Inspect the 'W' terminal wiring on the back of the alternator for breaks, chafing, or loose/corroded connectors, and verify continuity to the Instrumentation Controller.

  3. Test the alternator 'W' terminal output using a multimeter set to AC frequency (Hz) while the engine is running (should be ~200+ Hz at idle and increase smoothly).

  4. Check engine-to-chassis ground straps and battery voltage, as poor grounds or weak batteries can cause erratic sensor readings.

  5. Verify primary engine speed on the tachometer to rule out a failing primary engine speed sensor (which usually triggers ENG 115 or ENG 121).

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Resolve Belt Issues (If Applicable)

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a slipping belt, use a breaker bar to release the belt tensioner, remove the old belt, and install a new one. Ensure the tensioner is applying adequate pressure.

  3. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

    If the W terminal wire is damaged, cut out the damaged section, splice in a new piece of wire using weather-sealed heat-shrink butt connectors, and re-seat the terminal securely onto the alternator.

  4. Replace the Alternator (If the W terminal has failed internally)

    With the battery disconnected, remove the alternator drive belt. Disconnect the B+ (battery) cable, the exciter wire, and the W terminal wire from the rear of the alternator. Remove the alternator mounting bolts and carefully extract the heavy unit from the engine bay. Mount the new alternator and torque the mounting bolts to OEM spec. Reconnect the B+, exciter, and W terminal wires. Reinstall the drive belt and verify proper routing.

  5. Test and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the negative battery cable. Start the tractor and verify that the tachometer works and the battery is charging (usually ~13.8V to 14.4V). Clear the fault codes from the Transmission Controller and test drive the machine to ensure TRANS 75 does not return.
