New Holland TRANS 83 – Transmission Controller (TCU): Communications Lost with Engine Controller
Issue description
The transmission control system has lost its CAN bus communication signal with the engine's control system, preventing the two systems from sharing critical operational data.
Applies to these machines

Check the cause
Inspect Connectors: Check the physical connection points at both the Engine Controller (ECU) and the Transmission Controller (TCU). Look for loose connections, backed-out pins, or corrosion.
Wiring Harness Inspection: Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness that runs between the engine and the transmission for any visible physical damage, chafing, or breaks.
Continuity Test: Test the CAN bus lines for opens or shorts to ground/power.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery before servicing the electrical system.
Clean and Reseat Connectors
If the diagnostic checks reveal dirty or loose connectors at the engine or transmission controllers, clean the pins with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and firmly reseat the connectors.
Repair Wiring
If the wiring harness is damaged (chafed wires or broken CAN lines), repair the affected section of the harness using proper soldering and heat-shrink techniques, or replace the harness section entirely.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use a diagnostic tool or DTC eraser to clear the TRANS 83 fault code from the system.
Test Operation
Start the tractor and verify that the transmission and engine are communicating properly and that the code does not return.
