Issue description

The Universal Control Module (UCM) has detected that one of its 12V inputs or outputs has continuously exceeded the maximum allowable current limit. This typically indicates a short circuit to ground, a severely overloaded circuit, or a failing actuator/solenoid drawing excessive amperage.

Check the cause

  1. Verify battery voltage and inspect the main ground connections. A poor ground can cause current spikes in other circuits.

  2. Visually inspect the main chassis and cab wiring harnesses connected to the UCM for chafing, melting, or pinched wires that could be causing a short to ground.

  3. Isolate the circuits powered by the UCM (such as electro-hydraulic controls, brake lights, or solenoids). Use a multimeter to check the resistance of these components. A shorted solenoid coil will draw excessive current and trigger this code.

  4. Ensure the alternator is not overcharging or sending voltage spikes. Check the B+ and D+ terminal wires.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Always turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position and disconnect the negative battery cable before servicing the electrical system or the UCM.

  2. Isolate the Short

    Disconnect the harness connectors from the UCM. Using a digital multimeter, test the pins on the harness side for continuity to ground on circuits that should have resistance (e.g., sensor supplies, solenoid power wires).

  3. Repair Wiring/Components

    If a short to ground is found in the harness, repair the damaged section of the wire or replace the affected harness (e.g., Chassis Electro-Hydraulic Module Harness). If a specific actuator or solenoid is shorted internally, replace the component.

  4. UCM Replacement (If Necessary)

    If the wiring harness and all external components test perfectly fine, the UCM itself has likely suffered an internal short or hardware failure and must be replaced.

  5. Reassembly and Clearing Codes

    Reconnect the UCM and battery. Turn the key on and use the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive fault codes and verify that UCM 1223 does not return upon operating the machine's hydraulic and electrical functions.
