New Holland UCM 1513 – UCM: Right Brake Light Actuation: Short to Power

Issue description

This indicates that the control module is detecting unexpected voltage on the right brake light circuit. This typically happens when the power wire for the right brake light is chafed and touching another 12V power source, or if there is an internal short within the light assembly or wiring harness.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection of the Light: Inspect the right rear tail/brake light assembly for physical damage, water intrusion, or melted plastic that could cause an internal short.

  2. Harness Inspection: Trace the wiring harness from the right brake light back to the UCM. Look for pinched wires, chafing against the machine's frame, or exposed copper that might be bridging the brake light circuit to a constant 12V power wire.

  3. Connector Check: Disconnect the pigtail at the right brake light and the connector at the UCM. Check for corrosion, bent pins, or moisture bridging the terminals.

  4. Multimeter Testing: With the machine off and the brake light disconnected, use a multimeter to check for continuity between the brake light power wire and other 12V sources. If voltage is present when the brake is not actuated, the short is in the harness.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and engage the battery quick-disconnect switch (if equipped), or manually disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Isolate the Short

    Disconnect the right brake light assembly. Reconnect the battery and test the circuit. If the short to power disappears, the brake light assembly is internally shorted and must be replaced.

  3. Repair the Harness

    If the short persists with the light disconnected, locate the damaged section of the wiring harness. Splice and solder the damaged wires, then seal them with heat-shrink tubing. Secure the harness away from pinch points using zip ties.

  4. Reassembly

    Plug the new brake light or repaired harness back in.

  5. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Turn the key on and test the brake lights. The UCM may clear the code automatically upon detecting normal circuit parameters, or you may need to use a CAN-bus diagnostic tool / DTC eraser to clear the historic code from the UCM's memory.
