UCM 1523

New Holland UCM 1523 – UCM: Left Brake Light Actuation: Short to Power

Issue description

This fault code indicates that the control circuit responsible for actuating the left brake light is detecting unexpected voltage. The system is seeing a "Short to Power" (STP), meaning the signal wire is likely making direct contact with a 12V power source, or there is an internal short within the light assembly or the control module.

Applies to these machines

  • L213
  • L215
  • L218
  • L220
  • L223
  • L225
  • L228
  • L230
  • L234
  • C227
  • C232
  • C238

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the left rear tail/brake light assembly for physical damage, cracked lenses, or water intrusion, which frequently causes internal shorts.

  2. Trace the wiring harness from the left brake light back toward the UCM. Look for pinched wires, melted insulation, or areas where the harness has chafed against the machine's frame.

  3. Disconnect the left brake light connector. Turn the ignition on (without pressing the brake) and use a multimeter to check for voltage on the signal wire. If 12V is present, the short is in the wiring harness or the UCM.

  4. Inspect the UCM harness connectors for corrosion, moisture, or bent pins that could be bridging a power circuit to the brake light circuit.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable (or turn the master battery disconnect switch to the "OFF" position) to prevent electrical damage during repair.

  2. Isolate the Short

Disconnect the pigtail connector at the left brake light.

  3. Test the Assembly

If the wiring harness tested fine during your diagnostics (no voltage present when the brake is off), the short to power is internal to the brake light assembly. Replace the left tail/brake light assembly.

  4. Repair the Harness

If the harness showed constant voltage during diagnostics, unwrap the wire loom tracing back to the UCM. Locate the chafed or melted section where the brake light wire is contacting a power wire. Splice and solder the damaged wires, seal with heat-shrink tubing, and re-loom the harness.

  5. Reassemble and Clear Codes

Reconnect the brake light and the battery. Turn the key on, verify that the left brake light functions normally, and clear the UCM 1523 fault code using a diagnostic tool or the machine's display monitor.
