UCM 1912

New Holland UCM 1912 – UCM (Universal Control Module): Power Supply: Rail 12VM - Left and Right Brake Lights and Aux Extend Input Power OFF

Issue description

The Universal Control Module (UCM) monitors its internal power distribution rails. Rail "12VM" is a specific 12-volt circuit responsible for supplying power to the left and right brake lights as well as the auxiliary extend input (part of the electro-hydraulic control system). This code triggers when the UCM detects that the power output on this specific rail has been shut off, typically due to a blown fuse, an open circuit, a short to ground in the wiring harness, or a failure of the connected components (brake lights or aux extend solenoid) drawing excessive current.

Check the cause

  1. Check the main fuse box for blown fuses, specifically the 35A UCM Power fuse and the 7.5A Brake Lamp fuse.

  2. Disconnect the left and right brake light assemblies and the auxiliary extend solenoid to isolate potential internal shorts.

  3. Inspect the chassis wiring harness leading to the rear brake lights and the auxiliary hydraulic block for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation.

  4. Inspect the UCM connectors (specifically positions A7, A9, and the brake lamp pins A1, A2) for water intrusion, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine and engage the battery quick-disconnect switch (or remove the negative battery cable) to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Replace Blown Fuses

Locate the cab fuse panel. If the 7.5A brake lamp fuse or 35A UCM power fuse is blown, replace it. Do not install a higher amperage fuse.

  3. Test the Circuit

Reconnect the battery and turn the key to the ON position. If the fuse blows immediately, there is a dead short to ground in the wiring harness. Use a digital multimeter to trace the 12VM circuit wire from the UCM to the brake lights and aux extend solenoid, repairing any damaged wire sections. If the fuse holds, plug in the brake lights and aux extend solenoid one at a time. If plugging in a specific component causes the voltage to drop or the fuse to blow, replace that component.

  4. UCM Replacement (If Necessary)

If the wiring harness tests perfectly (no shorts, good continuity) and the components are not shorted, but the UCM still fails to output 12V on the 12VM rail, the UCM has suffered an internal hardware failure.

  5. Module Flashing

If replacing the UCM, install the new module and have a certified dealer flash/program the UCM with the correct machine software using the EST (Electronic Service Tool) before operating the machine.
