New Holland UCM 4062 – UCM: Ground Drive: Solenoid Right (A) Supply Short to Ground

Issue description

The control module has detected a short circuit to ground in the power supply circuit for the Right Ground Drive Solenoid (A). This solenoid is responsible for controlling the hydrostatic pump displacement that drives the right-side track or wheels forward/reverse. A "short to ground" means the electrical current is bypassing the solenoid load and going directly to the machine's chassis/ground, which will typically disable the right-side drive, cause erratic steering, or blow a circuit fuse to protect the module.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Tilt the cab to access the hydrostatic drive pumps. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the right ground drive pump solenoids. Look for pinched wires, melted insulation, or areas where the harness may have rubbed against the metal frame.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the Right (A) Solenoid. Check the connector pins for water ingress, corrosion, or melting.

  3. Solenoid Coil Resistance Test: Using a digital multimeter, measure the resistance across the two pins of the solenoid coil. If the resistance reads near 0 ohms, the solenoid coil is internally shorted and must be replaced.

  4. Harness Short-to-Ground Test: With the solenoid disconnected, disconnect the corresponding harness connector at the UCM. Measure the continuity between the solenoid supply wire and the machine's frame (ground). If there is continuity, the wiring harness is shorted to ground and must be repaired.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare machine for harness repair

    If the wiring harness is shorted: Turn off the machine, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Locate harness damage

    Trace the supply wire from the pump solenoid back to the UCM to locate the chafed or melted section.

  3. Repair harness

    Cut out the damaged section of the wire and repair it using weather-resistant heat-shrink butt connectors.

  4. Secure harness

    Re-loom the harness and secure it with zip ties away from moving linkages and hot hydraulic lines.

  5. Prepare machine for solenoid replacement

    If the solenoid is internally shorted: Turn off the machine, relieve any residual hydraulic pressure, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  6. Clean work area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the right hydrostatic pump control valve to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  7. Disconnect solenoid

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the Right (A) Solenoid.

  8. Remove faulty solenoid

    Remove the retaining nut at the end of the solenoid stem and slide the faulty coil off the cartridge (if it is a slip-on coil). If it is a one-piece cartridge valve, use a wrench to unthread the entire valve assembly from the pump block.

  9. Lubricate O-rings

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid/cartridge with clean hydraulic oil.

  10. Install new solenoid

    Install the new solenoid and torque it to the manufacturer's specifications.

  11. Reconnect solenoid

    Reconnect the electrical connector.

  12. Clear fault code

    Lower the cab, reconnect the battery, and use the instrument cluster or a diagnostic service tool to clear the UCM 4062 fault code.

  13. Calibrate and test

    Perform a ground drive calibration (often required when replacing EH drive components) and test the machine in a safe, open area to ensure proper tracking and steering.
