New Holland UCM 4081 – UCM: Ground Drive: Pumps Forward Solenoid(s) Short to Power
Issue description
The controller has detected unexpected voltage on the return circuit for the forward drive pump solenoids. This indicates that the wiring or the solenoid itself has short-circuited to a 12V power source, preventing the controller from properly regulating the ground drive in the forward direction.

Check the cause
Trace the wiring harness from the UCM to the forward pump control valves. Look for chafed, pinched, or melted wire insulation that could be bridging the solenoid return wire to a 12V power wire.
Inspect the connectors at both the UCM and the pump control valve. Look for pushed-out pins, loose connections, or corrosion/water intrusion that could bridge the circuits.
Disconnect the forward pump solenoid. Using a multimeter, check the resistance of the solenoid coil to see if it has failed internally (shorted).
With the solenoid disconnected and the key ON, probe the return wire on the harness side to see if 12V is present. If voltage is present, the short to power is in the wiring harness. If no voltage is present, the UCM may be faulty or the solenoid itself is internally shorted.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Always turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable before servicing electrical components.
Access the Pump
Lift and safely support the cab (if required on your specific model) to access the hydrostatic drive pumps and control valves.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short in the harness, cut out the damaged section of wiring and splice in new wire using weather-sealed heat-shrink butt connectors. Reroute the harness away from vibration points.
Replace Solenoid
Disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty forward pump solenoid. Remove the retaining nut at the end of the solenoid stem. Slide the old solenoid coil off the valve cartridge. Slide the new OEM solenoid coil onto the stem and torque the retaining nut to OEM specifications.
Reassembly & Clearing Codes
Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery. Turn the key ON and use the instrument cluster or diagnostic tool to clear the UCM 4081 fault code. Test the machine's forward drive functionality in a safe, open area.
