New Holland UCM 4381 – UCM: Ground Drive: Pumps Reverse Solenoid(s) Short to Power

The system has detected a short circuit to a power source (12V) on the circuit controlling the ground drive pump's reverse directional solenoids (specifically a short to power on the common solenoid return). This prevents the machine from properly modulating or engaging reverse drive.

   Safety First: Park the machine on level ground, lower the boom, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

   Harness Inspection: Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the UCM to the hydrostatic drive pump solenoids. Look for chafed insulation, melted wires, or pinch points where the solenoid wire might be rubbing against a 12V power wire.

   Voltage Test: Disconnect the harness at the reverse pump solenoids. Turn the key to the ON position (engine off). Use a multimeter to check for voltage on the signal/return wire. If 12V is present without a reverse command, the harness is shorted to power.

   Solenoid Test: Check the internal resistance of the reverse solenoids. If a solenoid is internally shorted to its own power supply or casing, it will trigger this code.

   Connector Check: Inspect the UCM harness connectors and the solenoid connectors for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge the power and signal circuits.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the battery disconnect switch or disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental electrical spikes.

   Access the Pump

   Tilt the cab or open the rear access panels to gain access to the hydrostatic tandem drive pump where the directional control solenoids are mounted.

   Repair the Harness

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a short in the wiring harness, cut out the damaged section of wire. Splice in a new section of wire using weather-sealed heat-shrink butt connectors, or replace the affected harness section entirely.

   Replace the Solenoid

   If the solenoid itself failed the resistance test: Clean the area around the solenoid to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system. Disconnect the electrical connector. Unscrew the retaining nut and slide the faulty solenoid coil off the valve stem (or unthread the entire cartridge valve if it is a single-piece unit). Install the new solenoid, torque to OEM specifications, and plug in the connector.

   Reassemble and Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery. Turn the key ON and use a diagnostic tool (or the machine's onboard display) to clear the UCM 4381 code.

   Test Operation

   Start the machine and test the ground drive in both forward and reverse to ensure smooth operation and verify the code does not return.
