New Holland UCM 5131 – UCM (Universal Control Module): Bucket Rollback / Dump: Pin A Short to Ground / Open Circuit
Issue description
The system has detected that the signal voltage from Pin A on the right-hand joystick (which controls the bucket rollback and dump functions) has failed low. The controller expects a steady neutral voltage (typically around 2.5V) and a smooth voltage sweep (between 0.5V and 4.5V) when the joystick is moved. A short to ground or a broken wire (open circuit) causes the voltage to drop out of this expected range, triggering the code and often forcing the machine into a limp home or restricted implement operating mode.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading from the base of the right-hand joystick to the main cab harness. Look for pinched wires, chafing, or disconnected plugs.
Voltage Sweep Test: Using a multimeter, back-probe Pin A on the right joystick connector. With the key ON (engine off), the voltage should read approximately 2.5 V when the joystick is in the spring-centered neutral position.
Axis Test: Move the joystick left and right (rollback and dump). The voltage should change at a smooth rate between 0.5 V and 4.5 V. If the voltage is stuck at 0V, erratic, or does not read 2.5V in neutral, the joystick potentiometer is likely failing.
Continuity/Short Test: Disconnect the joystick and the UCM. Check the continuity of the wire corresponding to Pin A from the joystick connector to the UCM connector. Test the wire for continuity to ground to rule out a short in the chassis harness.
Component Isolation: If available, temporarily plug in a known-good joystick. If the fault clears, the joystick is the culprit. If the fault persists with a good joystick and verified wiring, the UCM itself may be at fault.
Repair steps
Prepare machine
Lower the loader arms to the ground, turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake.
Disconnect battery
Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during repair.
Access joystick
Remove the right-hand control pod/console covers to access the base of the right joystick.
Inspect connector
Disconnect the electrical connector at the base of the joystick. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out terminals. Clean and reseat if necessary.
Repair wiring harness
If the diagnostic checks proved the wiring harness has a short to ground or an open break, locate the damaged section of the harness and splice in a repair wire using weather-sealed connectors, or replace the affected harness section.
Remove faulty joystick
If the diagnostic checks proved the joystick is outputting erratic or no voltage, unbolt the faulty right joystick assembly from the console mount.
Install new joystick
Install the new OEM replacement joystick and secure the mounting bolts.
Reassemble console
Reconnect the joystick electrical connector and reassemble the console covers.
Clear fault code
Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use the instrument cluster or an electronic service tool (EST) to clear the inactive 5131 fault code.
Test operation
Start the machine and test the bucket rollback and dump functions to verify the repair.
