New Holland UCM 5144 – UCM: Aux Control Function: Pin B Short to Ground / Open Circuit

The Universal Control Module (UCM) has detected a voltage irregularity on the signal circuit (Pin B) for the auxiliary hydraulic control thumbwheel. The system is seeing either zero voltage (short to ground) or a complete loss of connection (open circuit) on this specific pin, which disables the auxiliary hydraulic functions for safety.

   Inspect the wiring harness exiting the base of the joystick for obvious chafing, pinches, or severed wires. Check the connector for pushed-out pins or corrosion.

   The thumbwheel switch utilizes three wires: Black (Ground), Red (Input/5V Power), and Yellow (Output/Signal). Back-probe the connector with a multimeter. At idle (center detent), the signal wire should measure approximately 2.5V. Roll the thumbwheel to both extremes. The voltage should smoothly sweep to approximately 0.5V and 4.5V (or 1.0V and 4.0V depending on the exact switch revision). If the voltage is dead or erratic, the switch is internally faulty.

   If the switch tests good, disconnect the harness at the joystick and at the UCM. Test the 'Pin B' wire for continuity from end to end (to rule out an open circuit) and test it for continuity to the chassis ground (to rule out a short to ground).

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

   Access the Component

   Remove the protective boot and side panels necessary to access the right-hand joystick wiring connections.

   Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

   If the diagnostic tests revealed a broken or chafed wire between the joystick and the UCM, splice and heat-shrink the damaged section, or replace the affected harness segment.

   Replace the Switch/Joystick (If Applicable)

   If the thumbwheel switch itself failed the voltage test, you can either replace the individual switch (requires disassembling the joystick handle and soldering/pinning the new switch) or replace the entire joystick assembly. Mount the new joystick or switch and route the wiring carefully to prevent future chafing.

   Reassembly and Testing

   Reconnect the wiring harnesses and the battery. Turn the key to the ON position.

   Clear Codes

   Use a diagnostic tool or DTC eraser to clear the UCM 5144 code. Verify that the auxiliary hydraulics now function correctly and the code does not return.
