UCM 5147

New Holland UCM 5147 – UCM (Universal Control Module): Aux Control Function: In-Range Fault

Issue description

The control module is receiving a signal from the auxiliary hydraulic control thumbwheel (the proportional roller switch located on the joystick) that falls outside of its expected or calibrated voltage range.

Applies to these machines

  • L213
  • L215
  • L218
  • L220
  • L223
  • L225
  • L230
  • C227
  • C232
  • C238

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the auxiliary thumbwheel on the joystick for physical binding, dirt, or damage. Ensure the roller returns to the neutral position smoothly and is not stuck.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the joystick and the UCM. Look for loose pins, corrosion, or chafing that could cause unwanted resistance in the sensor circuit.

  3. Attempt to perform a joystick calibration procedure using the machine's advanced display monitor or the electronic service tool to correct a drifted sensor.

Repair steps

  1. Park the machine on a level surface, lower the boom, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery.

Ensure the machine is safe to work on before beginning repairs.

  2. Clean the joystick assembly, specifically around the auxiliary thumbwheel, using electrical contact cleaner to remove any debris that might be interfering with the sensor.

Debris can cause physical binding or interfere with the sensor's operation.

  3. Disconnect the joystick harness and use a multimeter to check the continuity of the wiring harness from the joystick connector to the UCM connector. Repair any damaged wires.

Look for loose pins, corrosion, or chafing that could cause unwanted resistance.

  4. Reconnect the battery and run the joystick calibration procedure.

A drifted sensor can often be corrected by teaching the UCM the new neutral and end-stroke values.

  5. If the calibration fails, or if the UCM 5147 code returns immediately after calibration, replace the joystick assembly.

The potentiometer inside the joystick has failed. The thumbwheel sensor is generally not serviced separately.

  6. To replace the joystick, disconnect its harness, unbolt the joystick base from the control pod, and remove the unit.

Remove the faulty joystick assembly from the machine.

  7. Install the new OEM joystick and connect the harness.

Ensure the correct left or right joystick is installed for the specific auxiliary function.

  8. Perform a mandatory joystick calibration after installing the new part.

Crucial Step: This allows the UCM to learn the new sensor's specific voltage parameters.

  • EH Joystick Assembly

    47778097

Replaces prior part numbers 84249066, 47548974, and 47416528. Verify whether your machine requires the left or right joystick for the specific auxiliary function throwing the code.

  • Universal Control Module (UCM) / ECU

    47395504

Replaces 84348127, 84267444. Remanufactured part number: 47395504R or 84348127R. Only replace the UCM if the joystick and wiring are confirmed 100% functional and the UCM is proven to be internally faulty. A new UCM will need to be flashed/programmed by a dealer before use.
