New Holland UCM 5204 – UCM: Left Joystick L-R Axis (Boom Raise/Lower) - In-Range Fault

The control module is receiving an erratic signal or a voltage that is outside the expected calibrated parameters from the left joystick's left-right axis (which controls the boom raise and lower functions). Because it is an "in-range" fault, the circuit is not completely shorted to ground or power, nor is it an open circuit; rather, the sensor's output is illogical or failing mechanically/electrically within its operating band.

   Inspect the wiring harness and the electrical connector at the base of the left joystick for any signs of chafing, corrosion, moisture intrusion, or backed-out pins.

   Verify that the joystick is receiving proper supply voltage and ground from the UCM.

   Use the machine's advanced display panel or the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to access the switch diagnostics screen. Monitor the live voltage/percentage input of the Left Joystick L-R axis while moving the joystick to see if the signal drops out or spikes erratically.

   Attempt to perform an EH Joystick Calibration through the instrument cluster. If the joystick internal potentiometers/Hall-effect sensors are worn, the calibration will fail, confirming the joystick needs replacement.

   Park the machine on a level surface, lower the boom completely, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

   Ensure the machine is safe to work on before beginning the repair.

   Remove the trim panels/covers on the left-hand control pod to expose the base of the joystick assembly.

   This provides access to the joystick mounting and electrical connections.

   Carefully disconnect the main electrical harness connector from the left joystick.

   Ensure you do not damage the harness or connector pins.

   Remove the mounting bolts securing the joystick base to the console.

   Keep the hardware for reinstalling the new joystick.

   Extract the faulty joystick assembly from the machine.

   Remove the old unit completely.

   Insert the new joystick assembly into the console and secure it with the mounting bolts.

   Ensure the joystick is properly seated before tightening.

   Reconnect the electrical harness connector, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

   A secure connection is required to prevent future intermittent faults.

   Reinstall the left-hand control pod trim panels.

   Replace all covers removed during disassembly.

   Reconnect the negative battery cable.

   Restore power to the machine.

    Turn the ignition on and use the machine's display monitor or the EST to perform the mandatory EH Joystick Calibration procedure.

    The UCM must learn the new joystick's exact neutral, minimum, and maximum voltage limits before the machine will operate properly.
