UCM 5215

New Holland UCM 5215 – UCM (Universal Control Module): Ground Drive: Pin B Short to Power / Left Joystick Forward-Back Axis - Pin B Short to Power

Issue description

The control module has detected that the signal voltage on Pin B of the left joystick (which controls the forward and reverse ground drive axis) is shorted to a power source (battery voltage). This prevents the machine from safely determining the operator's intended drive direction.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness between the left joystick and the UCM. Look for pinched wires, chafing against the cab frame, or melted insulation that could cause the Pin B wire to touch a 12V power wire.

  2. Connector Check: Inspect the electrical connector at the base of the left joystick. Look for corrosion, water intrusion, or pushed-out pins that could bridge the power and signal circuits.

  3. Isolate the Short (Harness vs. Joystick): Disconnect the left joystick connector. Turn the machine's key to the ON position. Using a multimeter, probe the harness-side connector for Pin B. If it reads battery voltage (12V), the short to power is in the machine's wiring harness. If there is no voltage on the harness side, the short is internal to the left joystick's sensor/circuit board.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

If the harness is faulty, disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Trace wire

Trace the Pin B wire from the joystick connector back to the UCM to locate the short.

  3. Repair wire

Repair the damaged wire using proper splicing techniques and heat-shrink tubing, then re-loom the harness.

  4. Disconnect battery

If the left joystick is faulty (internal short), turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  5. Access joystick

Remove the left console trim and rubber boot to access the joystick mounting hardware.

  6. Disconnect connector

Disconnect the main electrical connector from the bottom of the left joystick.

  7. Remove joystick

Unbolt the faulty left joystick assembly from the console mount and remove it.

  8. Install new joystick

Install the new joystick assembly and secure the mounting bolts.

  9. Reconnect and reassemble

Reconnect the electrical connector and reinstall the console trim and boot.

  10. Test machine

Reconnect the battery, power on the machine, and verify that the UCM 5215 code is now inactive. Test the ground drive for proper forward and reverse operation.
