New Holland UCM 5217 – UCM (Universal Control Module): Ground Drive: In-Range Fault

The control module is receiving a signal from the left joystick's Forward-Back (ground drive) axis that is within the normal electrical operating voltage limits, but the signal value is implausible. This typically happens when the joystick fails to return to its expected neutral/center calibration value, or the internal potentiometer/Hall-effect sensor is degrading and sending erratic data.

   Check the base of the left joystick for dirt, debris, or physical obstructions that might be preventing the joystick from returning perfectly to its spring-centered neutral position.

   Inspect the wiring harness connecting the left joystick to the UCM for loose pins, corrosion, or chafing that could cause high resistance and skew the sensor's voltage signal.

   Check for related fault code 1212 (Ground Drive Calibration Not Complete). If the machine lost its calibration memory, it may throw an in-range fault.

   Clean and Center

   Ensure the left joystick is completely free of obstructions and sits perfectly in the neutral position.

   Recalibrate the Joystick

   Using the advanced instrument cluster or the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST), initiate the 'Ground Drive Calibration' procedure. Follow the on-screen prompts to stroke the joystick fully forward and fully backward to teach the UCM the new sensor ranges.

   Test the Harness

   If the calibration fails or the code immediately returns, disconnect the left joystick and use a multimeter to check the continuity of the Forward-Back axis signal wires back to the UCM.

   Replace the Joystick

   If the wiring harness tests good (no high resistance or partial shorts) and the UCM is supplying the correct 5V reference voltage, the internal sensors of the joystick have failed. You must replace the left joystick assembly.

   Final Calibration

   After installing the new joystick, you must perform the Ground Drive Calibration procedure again so the UCM can learn the exact neutral and stroke values of the new component.
