New Holland UCM 5242 – UCM: Boom Raise/Lower: Loader Arm Solenoid(s) Short to Ground
Issue description
This code indicates that the control module has detected a short circuit to ground in the electrical circuit supplying power to the directional valve solenoids responsible for raising and lowering the loader boom arm.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the UCM to the loader arm directional control valve for pinched wires, chafing, or melted insulation touching the chassis.
Disconnect the electrical connector at the loader arm raise/lower solenoids and use a multimeter to check for continuity to ground on the supply wire to isolate a harness short.
Measure the resistance between the solenoid pins and the metal body of the valve/ground to check for an internal short to ground in the solenoid coil.
Repair steps
Safety First
Park the machine on a level surface. Lower the boom completely to the ground (or rest it securely on the mechanical boom locks if it must be raised for access). Turn off the engine, relieve hydraulic pressure, and disconnect the negative battery cable.
Access the Valve Block
Locate the main hydraulic directional control valve block (usually located under the cab, which may need to be tilted forward depending on the model).
Wiring Repair
If the diagnostic checks revealed a harness short, splice and repair the damaged section of the wire using weather-sealed heat-shrink connectors, or replace the affected harness section.
Solenoid Replacement
Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the faulty loader arm solenoid. Remove the retaining nut at the end of the solenoid stem. Slide the faulty solenoid coil off the valve cartridge. Slide the new OEM solenoid coil onto the stem and tighten the retaining nut to the specified torque (do not overtighten, as this can distort the cartridge).
Reassembly
Reconnect the electrical harness to the new solenoid. Lower and secure the cab. Reconnect the battery.
Testing
Turn the key on, clear the stored UCM fault codes, and operate the boom raise/lower functions to verify the repair.
