New Holland UCM 5501 – UCM: Boom Raise/Lower: Sensor Short to Ground / Open Circuit
Issue description
The control module is detecting an abnormal voltage drop from the boom raise/lower spool position sensor. The voltage is either dropping below the minimum threshold (indicating a short to ground) or the signal is completely lost (indicating a broken wire, disconnected plug, or internally failed sensor).
Applies to these machines
6 machines- L218
- L220
- L223
- L225
- C-Series models
- Tier 4B Final Machines
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness routing from the UCM to the main hydraulic control valve for chafed, pinched, or melted wires that could cause a short to chassis ground.
Disconnect the harness at the loader arm spool sensor and check for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins inside the connector.
Using a multimeter, check the sensor circuit for continuity and test the signal wire for a short to ground by measuring resistance between the signal pin and chassis ground.
Verify that the sensor is receiving the correct 5V reference voltage from the UCM.
Repair steps
Secure the Machine
Lower the boom/loader arms completely to the ground to relieve all hydraulic pressure. Turn off the ignition.
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the main hydraulic control valve block. Identify the spool position sensor for the Boom Raise/Lower (Loader Arm) section.
Remove the Sensor
Disconnect the electrical harness from the sensor. If equipped, remove the spool position sensor end cap. Carefully unthread and remove the faulty spool position sensor from the control valve.
Install the New Sensor
Thread the new spool position sensor into the control valve and tighten to OEM specifications. Reinstall the end cap if applicable.
Reassembly
Reconnect the electrical harness to the new sensor. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
Test
Turn the key on, clear the stored UCM 5501 fault code, and operate the boom raise/lower joystick to verify the repair.
