UCM 9152

New Holland UCM 9152 – UCM (Universal Control Module): CAN Bus Communication: Timed out after 5 seconds ("Bus-Off at CAN-Bus No.1")

Issue description

The control module has lost communication on the CAN-Bus No.1 network for more than 5 seconds. The "Bus-Off" condition means the controller detected a critical number of communication errors and has isolated itself from the network to prevent disrupting other modules.

Applies to these machines

  • 200 Series Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
  • L213
  • L216
  • L218
  • L220
  • L221
  • L223

  • C232
  • C238
  • Case SV250
  • Case TR320
  • Case TV380

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the UCM is receiving proper voltage by checking the UCM power relays and the main fuse box (a loss of power will cause it to drop off the CAN bus)

  2. Inspect the chassis and EH control wiring harnesses for physical damage, chafing, or broken wires

  3. Test the CAN High and CAN Low lines for open circuits, shorts to ground, or shorts to power

  4. Check the connectors at the UCM and the main harness for corrosion, moisture, or backed-out pins

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Battery

Turn off the battery disconnect switch or disconnect the negative battery cable before servicing the electrical system.

  2. Repair Wiring

If diagnostic checks reveal broken wires or shorts in the CAN lines or UCM power supply, repair the affected section of the wiring harness or replace the harness entirely.

  3. Replace Relays/Fuses

If the UCM power relay is faulty, replace it to restore power to the module.

  4. Replace the UCM

If the wiring, power, and grounds are all intact but the UCM still fails to communicate (internal failure), the UCM must be replaced.

  5. Module Programming

If a new or remanufactured UCM is installed, it will need to be flashed/programmed with the electronic service tool (EST) before the machine can be operated.

  6. Clear Codes

Once the repair is complete, use a diagnostic tool or DTC eraser to clear the fault codes from the system.
