New Holland UCM 9153 – UCM: CAN Bus Communication: EEC1 Message Timed out
Issue description
The Universal Control Module (UCM) has lost communication with the Engine Control Unit (ECU) regarding the EEC1 (Electronic Engine Controller 1) CAN message. The fault triggers when the UCM does not receive this specific message within the expected timeframe (typically a 5-second timeout).

Check the cause
Check for other CAN timeout codes (such as 9154: TSC1 Message Timed out) which indicate a total CAN bus failure rather than an isolated EEC1 message issue.
Look for code 1900 (UCM Ground Fault) as a poor ground to the UCM is a common cause of communication drops.
Verify that the Engine ECU is receiving proper voltage and has a solid ground connection.
Measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins to ensure the terminating resistors are intact (typically 60 ohms total).
Repair steps
Inspect Connectors
Disconnect the wiring harness connectors at both the UCM and the Engine ECU. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or pushed-back pins. Clean and apply dielectric grease if necessary.
Test CAN Wiring
Using a multimeter, test the CAN High and CAN Low wires for continuity between the Engine ECU and the UCM.
Check for Shorts
Test the CAN bus wires for a short to ground or a short to power.
Repair UCM Ground
If a UCM ground fault is detected, repair or replace the UCM ground wire as required by the service manual.
Harness Repair
If continuity is broken or a short is found, repair or replace the affected section of the machine's communication wiring harness.
Module Replacement
If the wiring harness, grounds, and power supplies are all in good condition, but the UCM still cannot receive the EEC1 message, the UCM or Engine ECU may have an internal failure and will require replacement and dealer reprogramming.
Parts you might need
(8)Universal Control Module (UCM) / Electronic Control Unit (ECU)
Exact part numbers vary heavily depending on the specific machine model, generation, and cab configuration. Always verify fitment with a dealer using the machine's PIN/Serial Number.
